Pre-Installation Tips

So you've decided that you don't need to pay anyone for installation, you can handle it! We support your DIY spirit, and would like to provide a few helpful tips on what you should do previous to installation to make sure everything will go smoothly. Once these are adhered to we're confident you can get it done.

Safety

As much as you want to handle the entire installation process on your own, some tasks still need the assistance of a professional. Check for necessary gas or water lines when applicable. If one is not available a piping/plumbing professional will need to install one for you. Electrical requirements are also important! Ensure the voltage/amps of the appliance is something your home can handle, and if it can't you will need the assistance of an electrician. Do not attempt any of these jobs without a professional. If you do not possess the proper training and knowledge, the consequences could be dire.

Measure Your Space

Put that measuring tape to good use and get the dimensions of the space where you will be fitting your appliance. Once you have these measurements, cross reference them with the minimum dimensions needed for your appliance. This information can be found in the installation guide or specification sheet for the unit (which can usually be found in the guides and manuals section of the product's page on ajmadison.com). While you still have that measuring tape handy, check the width and height of all doorways leading to the room where the appliance will be. You can't install a fridge and can't make it to the kitchen! Some appliances will also need an extra inch for ventilation purposes, so keep that in mind when choosing the right size for the space.

Allow for Door Swing

I hope you still have that measuring tape close, you still need it. Appliance with doors (refrigerators, ranges with ovens, laundry units et al) all need clearance to ensure they can open all the way. Look for the measurement showing clearance (such as when the door is open 90°) and make sure you have enough space!
